Explore Melbourne from dusk till dawn

16 February 2018

Undoubtedly a centrepiece of the city’s cultural calendar, and one of our favourite events, White Night returns for its sixth year this 17 February. The event brings the best of world art and performance to Melbourne for one night only, all steps away from the T&G Building.

This year’s White Night features over 100 free events spanning across the extravagant 12-hour festival. With everything from art installations to music, interactive events and illuminations, White Night is a must-do this summer.

To give you a glimpse of what to expect from the festival, we’ve put together a shortlist of exhibitions to kick-start your itinerary.

1. What If?

Location: Precinct 1, Royal Exhibition Building (South Façade)

Recommended viewing time: After 8.30pm

Designed exclusively for White Night by Hungarian artist group, Limelight Productions, this mesmerising 3D projection piece is centred on the festival’s ‘what if?’ theme. It will transform the exterior of Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building with unique images of the past and the present.

2. White Night at Melbourne Museum

Location: Precinct 1, Melbourne Museum

Recommended viewing time: 7.00pm – 7.00am

For a family friendly White Night experience that promises an entertainment adventure for kids and parents, look no further than Melbourne Museum. Enter the world of creepy crawlies at the Bugs Alive! Exhibition, journey back to prehistoric times with Dinosaur Walk, or take a front row seat to a battle of the marine titans, with Marine Life.

3. Fashion City

Location: Precinct 2, Bourke Street Mall

Recommended viewing time: 7.00pm – 7.00am

Hosted by the renowned Ministry of Entertainment production house, Fashion City combines the best of Melbourne Fashion with the theatrical extravagance expected from White Night.  With a 50-metre long catwalk, dancers and live vocalists, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill fashion show. Fashion City celebrates Melbourne as the ‘Fashion Capital’ of Australia.

4. World Stage

Location: Precinct 3, Birrarung Marr

Recommended viewing time: 7.00pm – 7.00am

If live entertainment, music and dance are your forte, the World Stage is the place to be. With performances starting from 7:00pm and continuing through all hours of the night (and into the morning), the World Stage celebrates Melbourne’s cultural diversity and immense talent.
