White Night Melbourne
14 February 2017
From dusk until dawn, White Night will light up Melbourne on 18 February to celebrate the city’s distinct cultural passions and artistic innovation.
Inspired by ‘Nuit Blanche’, a Paris event originally devised in 2002, White Night has since inspired over 20 cities around the world to create tailored events, each showcasing their own unique characteristics.
White Night Melbourne welcomes local, national and international artists, musicians and performers to be part of a 12-hour celebration of creativity.
The event has something for everyone, with one-off exhibitions, street performances, lighting, installations, film screenings, music, dance and interactive events, and takes place in the city’s streets and laneways, parklands, public spaces and cultural institutions, many within walking distance to the T&G Building.
Over 500,000 people are expected to venture into Melbourne’s CBD to experience the city come alive, in one of the key events on the Australian cultural calendar.
Here are some must-see things on this year’s festival program…
Lonsdale Street
Lonsdale Street, a few blocks from 161 Collins Street, will be transformed into an outdoor cinema, featuring short films, documentaries and animations, with large lounges inviting viewers to sit back, relax and enjoy a movie or two. Designed with families in mind, the screenings from 7pm are perfect for kids, but from 11pm onwards, the films are better suited for a more mature audience!
ACMI, Galleries Level, Federation Square
From the T&G Building, head down Hosier Lane to celebrate the moving image at ACMI’s Screen Worlds: The Story of Film, Television and Digital Culture exhibition.
Spanning over 110 years of moving image history, the exhibition showcases the very beginning of film and the rise of television, internet and the digital age. Screen Worlds holds 220 screen-based displays and 30 hours of moving image content.
Queen Victoria Garden, St. Kilda Road
Live and unplugged, MPavilion in the Queen Victoria Garden, just across the Yarra from the T&G Building, will come alive with a 12-hour live performance featuring musicians, songwriters and creative minds. Find a full list of artists here: https://whitenightmelbourne.com.au/event/unplugged
