Must-see Melbourne: Pop-up Globe Theatre

13 September 2017

Take a leap back in time and visit Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre… right in your home city.

Shakespeare is one of the world’s most famous poets, playwrights and actors, famously known for his dramatic plays and writing style. Some of his most popular plays will be brought to life in Melbourne over the new few months at a pop-up Globe Theatre.

The pop-up Globe will be the world’s first full-scale replica of Shakespeare’s second Globe Theatre – erected in the early 1600’s after the original Globe Theatre was burnt to the ground. The original Globe Theatre is known as the first purpose-built ‘playhouse’ in London.

Make your way to the pop up between 21 September and the 12 November for this once in a lifetime trip to the 1600’s.

Choose from a variety of shows including Shakespeare’s famous:

As You Like It

Written by Shakespeare in 1599, this romantic comedy confuses gender roles, nature and politics reflecting how mysterious, yet beautiful, life can be.

Much Ado About Nothing

One of Shakespeare’s most frequently presented romantic comedies, this play follows the love stories of Claudio and Hero, and Benedick and Beatrice following a brutal war. There will be no shortage of parties and masked balls throughout the show.

Othello

One of his most famous plays, Shakespeare’s Othello follows the story of Othello the Moor through his life of love, jealousy and trickery.

Around The Globe In 60 Minutes!

Without modern health, safety and fire regulations in large theatres, fire and hazardous materials were used in many Shakespeare plays – all in an effort to make the Globe the go-to theatre. The result? A fire that burned the theatre “to the ground in under two hours.” From its construction to its demise, watch a group of outrageous characters bring to life the tale of one of the greatest theatres in history.
