Five reasons to leave your car at home

10 April 2017

Are you sick of sitting in traffic day after day, doing the same commute to work?

Why not switch up your routine by leaving the car at home and walking, cycling or catching public transport to work?

Heavy peak hour traffic increases greenhouse gas emissions as well as air and noise pollution. Help to save the environment, allow some time back into your day to exercise or enjoy a good book by leaving the car at home.

Here are just five reasons you should travel to work differently:

Free public transport

Melbourne has a free city tram zone, providing an easy and convenient way for people to get around the city. Luckily for us, the T&G Building fits within this zone, helping tenants get to and from meetings, client lunches and events. With links to other transport networks such as train and light rail, it’s also an inexpensive way to travel to work.

Get fit

Riding a bike to work is a fun way to get fit and enjoy the great outdoors. There are a number of dedicated bike lanes throughout the CBD within a block of the T&G Building, including Collins Street, Swanston Street, Spring Street, and Batman Avenue.

Upon completion, the T&G Building will have excellent end-of-trip facilities with over 266 secure bicycle spaces. Showers and lockers are also available, providing everything cyclists need to ensure a smooth transition from cycling to work and back again.

Don’t have your own bike? That’s okay; Melbourne Bike Share provides bikes for hire from over 50 bike stations throughout the city. Near the T&G Building, you’ll find bike stations located at Bourke Street Mall, St Paul’s Cathedral, Federation Square and the corner of Spring and Collins Streets. A daily casual rate starts from just $3 and provides you with unlimited 30-minute trips that day. Use this map to plan your bicycle route from the T&G Building.

Boost your health

Walking has many health benefits including increased heart and lung fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, improved management of conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain and diabetes, increased muscle strength and reduced body fat.

Walking to work gives you the opportunity to get outside, breathe fresh air, and take time to appreciate your surroundings. By walking through the city streets you may even find a new hideaway café or restaurant to try. Don’t worry if you live too far away to walk to work, just catch the train and get off a few stops earlier.

Take the hassle out of late nights in the city

Allow yourself to enjoy a social night out or after work drinks with colleagues, knowing you already have your transportation sorted.

Cashless travel with a myki card gives you access to Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses to, from and around the city. So sit back, relax and enjoy that well-deserved cocktail on a Friday – myki will get you home!

More time for the things you enjoy

Catching the train to work provides you with more time to enjoy the things you love. This is particularly evident on longer trips where you can get stuck into a good book, a TV show on your iPad or even progress a creative project, such as knitting or drawing.

Flinders Street train station connects to the entire metropolitan rail network and is only an eight-minute walk to the T&G Building!

Take a walk on the wild side and ditch the car in favour of walking, cycling or catching public transport to work. It will help your hip pocket, improve your health and help do your bit for the environment.
